NORMAN, Okla. (5/14/18) – Arkansas State senior Tanner Napier began play Monday at the NCAA Regional golf tournament at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club, shooting a first-round 75 to place him tied for 36th among 75 players.

One of five individuals selected to compete in the regional, Napier ended the 54-hole tournament’s opening day only one stroke behind eight players tied for 28th place and within two strokes of the top 21 leaders.  The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each of the six regionals will advance to the finals.

Napier will enter Tuesday’s second round five strokes behind Nevada’s Corey Eddings and SMU’s McClure Meissner, who are currently the individual leaders not on one of the top five teams in the current standings.  Oklahoma sits atop the team leaderboard, followed by Auburn, Arkansas and North Florida in a tie for second place.  San Diego sits in fifth place with a three-stroke lead over Florida State.

Napier birdied four holes, including three on the front nine, and made nine pars, but was hurt by a double bogey on holes one and four.  He also recorded a bogey on three holes on the back nine, bringing his total for the day to 3-over-par.

The Paris, Texas, native is the fourth A-State men’s golfer to ever compete as an individual at an NCAA Regional.  His selection this season came one year after teammate Zan Luka Stirn played as a freshman in an NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge, La., giving A-State two different players in a regional in back-to-back years for the first time in school history.

Round two of the NCAA Regional in Norman will begin at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow, and Napier is set to tee off on hole one at 9:31 a.m.  Live results at the event are available on GolfStat.com.
