JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - With unusual heat this month, it has the HUB (Helping Underserved Belong) scrambling to secure shelter and hydration for the homeless in Jonesboro.
"This week we have certainly seen an influx because of the heat," HUB Director, Kim Bartee, said. "We have people coming in, it's our vacation week, but we are still here working."
More homeless are now making their way to the resource center in downtown Jonesboro to seek help and a place to cool off.
Bartee said they work with three resources that help place the homeless in emergency care, but those places are filling up fast.
"With most people downtown, I know they don't need to be loitering in front of businesses, so we need someplace maybe they can frequent and not be offensive or have somebody come at them and say get off my property," Bartee said.
HUB volunteers are looking for businesses, churches or anyone willing to open up space during the day as a cooling center for the homeless.
They also need a lot of water, baby wipes and hygiene products to give to people seeking help.
If you are interested in donating or opening up a facility, contact the HUB at 870-333-5731.
The HUB is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at 711 Union Street.
