LAWRENCE COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - A deputy will soon be stationed at the Lawrence County Courthouse on a full-time basis.
This week, the Lawrence County Quorum Court approved the addition of a deputy.
The decision comes just months after the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department moved out of the courthouse and into their new facility.
County Clerk Tina Stowers said she's thankful there will be a deputy stationed at the courthouse whenever it's open.
"Makes you feel much safer because you don't have any protection here anymore and I do feel safer knowing that there will be a deputy in the building," she said.
Stowers said she has a friend who is a county clerk in western Arkansas and knows the safety risk of working in a courthouse.
"They had a shooting in their building," she said. "They shot someone in the judge's office and they did point the gun at her in her office."
She said it gives many in the Lawrence County Courthouse a peace of mind knowing a deputy will be there full-time.
The deputy is set to begin work at the courthouse in June.
