Prosecutors Opt Not to Pursue Rape Case Against SeMo Cabbie

SEPTEMBER 8, 2005 - Posted at 3:53 p.m. CDT

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO - Prosecutors drop a case against a Cape Girardeau cabdriver accused of raping a female passenger after questions arose whether the crime really happened.

The 43-year-old driver faced up to seven years in prison if convicted.  His trial had been set for Monday.

But the Cape Girardeau County prosecutor said yesterday that the office was dropping the case because an investigation led him to question the woman's claims.

He said the woman didn't want to testify and didn't object to the charges being dropped.

The woman called police August 9, 2004, to report that the cabbie assaulted her after he picked her up late the night before at a bar where she'd been drinking.
