Carr, Patchell Earn Postseason Sun Belt Conference Awards

NEW ORLEANS, La. (5/21/18) – Arkansas State senior thrower Calea Carr was named Sun Belt Conference Track & Field Women’s Field Outstanding Performer and head coach Jim Patchell was named SBC Men’s Coach of the Year, the league office announced Tuesday. Carr was the high point scorer at the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships with 24 points. She won the shot put competition on Sunday with a throw of 15.61m (51-02.75), the second ranked throw in program history. She placed second in the discus throw (51.22m/168-00) and third in the hammer throw (55.90m/183-05) to round out her exceptional weekend. Patchell garners his sixth SBC Coach of the Year recognition after guiding the A-State men to the outdoor championship. The title marked the first time in program history that A-State has won the indoor and outdoor Sun Belt Conference titles in the same season. The Red Wolves earned the indoor title back in February and totaled 159 points to win by 28 points over Texas State (131). It marked the eighth outdoor championship in program history and the 17th total championship for the men’s program. A-State sends a program record 15 athletes for a program best 21 entries to the NCAA West Region Preliminary beginning Thursday in Sacramento, Calif.
