NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) -

A project to repave several roads and highways in and around the Newport area will have work crews busy for some time, with officials hopeful that the construction will help create a better roadway in the area.

According to a post on the Newport Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook page, the Arkansas Department of Transportation will be repaving Third Street, Malcolm Avenue and Highway 367 from the Blue Bridge through Newport and Diaz, starting in June.

The project is expected to take three and a half months to complete. However, weather could delay the work, officials said.

Chamber officials said in the post that crews will try to make the project as smooth as possible, with as few disruptions as possible.

Crews plan to work on one half-mile sections at a time to reduce construction time and help speed up the opening of lanes, officials said, noting crews plan to leave at least one driveway or back way into a business open while construction is going on to avoid problems.
