JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - For many people, sitting for eight hours a day is just part of their job, but one area doctor said that it could be detrimental to your health.
Dr. Shane Speights said inactivity is the culprit.
Sitting still for so long can cause aches and pains, and some studies say it's as bad for your health as smoking.
So for Dr. Speights and some of his patients, he prescribes something other than pills.
He suggests an adjustable desk.
"Things that were bothering them chronically, whether it be shoulder pain or back pain or neck pain, a lot of those things go away," Speights said. "And it's not just that you're standing still here instead, many times I find myself walking around the office or I'm more apt to be mobile if I'm already standing up as opposed to seated in a more comfortable position."
Dr. Speights said Arkansas especially ranks poorly in terms of physical inactivity.
So finding small ways to add activity to your everyday lifestyle, like standing at your desk at work, can really help.
