JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - An event this weekend will help raise money for girls to go to school.
The local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha is hosting a Debutante Pageant/Cotillion Ball at 7 p.m. Saturday at ASU Centennial Hall in Jonesboro.
During the event, at least a dozen girls ages 5 to 18 will be performing while $500 to $1,000 scholarships will be presented, based on funding that is available.
LaQuita Lewis with the sorority said the event will help provide an opportunity for young girls.
"Because we do a lot with the community and with girls empowerment. A lot of the girls, some of the girls, don't have as much confidence. So it builds their confidence to be able to in a room full of people and be put on a performance and show something, most of them, have never done," Lewis said.
Tickets are $25, which go toward scholarships and other events hosted by the sorority. The ticket does include a performance, a meal, and formal ball with dancing and music.
Information about the event can be found at the sorority's Facebook page.
