President Bush Visits the Gulf Coast

NEW ORLEANS -  President Bush has met with firefighters from across the country who are helping out in New Orleans. It was the first thing he did after arriving in New Orleans to begin his third visit to the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast since Katrina hit two weeks ago.

Bush visited the "tent city" at Our Lady of Holy Cross College. He greeted a group of firefighters from New York City who were giving back a rig the New Orleans Fire Department donated to them after the September eleventh, 2001, terror attacks.

Bush is spending the night aboard the USS Iwo Jima, which is the command center for the relief operation. He will meet with the military leaders overseeing relief efforts Monday, then tour New Orleans and Gulfport, Mississippi.

The president was greeted by New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin  upon his arrival. Nagin has been a vocal critic of the federal government's response to the hurricane.
