SEARCY, AR (KAIT/KARK) - The talk of a possible annexation into the city of Searcy has some White County landowners worried about what is at stake.
According to Little Rock NBC affiliate KARK, Mike Barnett moved into the county 40 years ago when he said the city essentially forced him out of city limits.
"I had a business started in the backyard of my house," Barnett said. "They shut it down because it was against their codes."
Barnett is against the proposed annexation.
President of the Searcy Chamber of Commerce Buck Layne said the annexation would protect the integrity of the new Highway 13, which has no zoning restrictions.
It would also help the city on their long-term plan to grow the city population to 25,000.
Searcy Mayor David Morris said he has gotten a lot of opposition from people who are concerned about losing their rights.
A public discussion on the proposed annexation is scheduled for June 7 at 6 p.m. at Searcy City Hall.
