MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A Memphis mother now faces criminal charges after her 12-year-old daughter was shot Tuesday morning.

Memphis Police Department arrested Katrena Blackshire, 33, hours after the shooting that took place around 8 a.m. outside Greenbriar Apartments on Madewell Street.

Blackshire's daughter was waiting in her mother's car for a bus to take her to summer camp. She was in the car with her 13-year-old brother, according to a police report.

Neighbors said they saw the two children fighting in the car.

Minutes later, a gunshot rang out through the parking lot.

Kashmire Clemons ran outside after hearing the screams for help.

"We stepped outside we saw the little girl on the ground. You know, everyone was just around her calling her name trying to get her to you know come back, but she wasn't responding," Clemons said.

"It's just traumatizing. It was a little kid. She doesn't deserve that," she said.

The girl was rushed to the hospital in extremely critical condition, where she later died.

The police report states Blackshire told police she knowingly left her children inside the vehicle with a loaded .380 semi-automatic handgun in the center console.

Blackshire is charged with aggravated child abuse and criminally negligent homicide. The 13-year-old boy who was in the car during the shooting is charged with reckless homicide.

Tuesday afternoon, Memphis Police Department stressed the fact that gun owners need to keep their weapons locked up and secure.

"We think about if the weapon was secured in the hands of an adult or a gun lock on it perhaps this may not have happened," Officer Sam Hines said.

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland also offered his condolence to the 12-year-old's family on Facebook:

"For our children's sake, we MUST do better as a community. And we are here to help... stop by a police TODAY to get a gun lock, so that we can keep this kind of tragedy from happening again."
