FRANKLIN, TN (WSMV) -

Cool heads and quick action helped a Williamson County couple save two people in the Harpeth River.

Just a few weeks prior, the couple took a safety class on what to do in these types of situations.

Amy and Kevin Owens saw a young woman in distress and put their knowledge to the test.

“It was a very deep section of the river, the water was really high that weekend due to all the rain we had,” Amy Owens said. “I immediately saw that she was struggling, and realized that was not a good situation to be in, not having a life jacket on and also the boat sinking.”

The Owens knew they had to do something, especially when another bystander jumped in the water without a life-jacket.

Kevin tossed a “throw rope” out into the water and was able to help pull the two ashore.

The Owens took their first water safety class back in April and remembered the basics.

“Don't be a victim. Don't make yourself a victim,” said Kevin Owens. “If someone is having trouble in the water, make sure you're safe first before you start helping them.”

The Owens love kayaking with their two 11-year-old sons. They initially wanted to take a class to know how to keep them safe on the water. But after this experience, they want to take even more classes.

They encourage others to do the same.

“I think the classes make you more aware of not only your safety but other paddlers on the river as well,” said Amy Owens.

“You're wanting to have a good time out on the water but you want to make sure everyone gets home,” said Kevin Owens.

Four people have died kayaking on Tennessee rivers in 2018.
