NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - Members of a Jackson County community gathered together Tuesday to remember an officer that died in the line of duty.
Newport Police Officers, Jackson County Sheriff Deputies, and community members gathered together at the Veterans Memorial Park in Newport to pay tribute to Lt. Patrick Weatherford.
Lt. Weatherford died in the line of duty June 12, 2017.
Many say they still remember the day and so gathered together on Tuesday to commemorate the day and his memory.
Sheriff David Lucas said Lt. Weatherford meant a lot to him.
"Patrick was not only a personal friend he was a brother in arms," Lucas said. "And in a small community like this and even in larger communities all over the country, law enforcement is one big family. It's kind of hard if you're not in this position to really understand the closeness that law enforcement has. And when we lost Patrick we lost a very dear brother."
Sheriff Lucas said it was important to everyone that they do something to honor him.
"We wanted to come together today on the anniversary of his loss," Lucas said. "To remember and reflect on how Patrick was. The type of person he was and the type of man he was for not only us but for the community. And to give them a chance to remember and reflect on his memory."
People took turns telling stories about Weatherford and what he meant to them personally.
Then everyone released black and blue balloons in honor of his memory.
"He meant a lot to this community," Lucas said. "He was the type of individual who would give you the shirt off his back. It didn't matter if you knew him or not. If you needed help, he was always there to help."
