Police: Man admitted to killing Dexter man, staging burglary

DEXTER, MO (KFVS) -

Police say a man admitted to killing a Dexter, Missouri man in June and staging a burglary.

Joshua J. Koonce, 31, of Dexter, was charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action on a warrant out of Stoddard County. His bond was set at $500,000 cash only.

According to Dexter police, on June 28 they activated the Stoddard County Major Case Squad for a suspicious death in the 1000 block of N. Mulberry St. in Dexter.

The victim was identified as 66-year-old Jimmy Lynn Casey of Dexter.

Police say they started looking for the person of interest, who had traveled out of state to avoid law enforcement.

They say the help of the Pueblo, Colorado Police Department, the person of interest was found.

On Tuesday, July 10, a Dexter detective and an investigator with the Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to Pueblo, Colorado and found the person of interest.

According to police, he was interviewed and admitted to killing Casey. They say he admitted to stabbing him and staging a burglary and then being taken to Colorado to evade law enforcement.

Joshua Koonce is in Pueblo, Colorado awaiting extradition back to Stoddard County, Mo.

During the investigation, police say other people "hindered the investigation."

David L. Koonce, 48; Brandon L. Koonce, 27; and Jared R. Eldreth, 28, all of Dexter, were each charged with hindering a prosecution of a felony. Their bonds were set at $12,500 cash only.
