STEM students strike a chord in guitar-building class

(KAIT/NBC) - Guitars are helping some Oklahoma City kids make the grade.

The smooth sounds guide them into the STEM world: science, technology, engineering, and math.

The building blocks of learning all come into play when building an electric guitar.

Middle school and high school teachers fine-tuned their custom-made guitar in a 5-day workshop.

Trainer Dave Parker says science and technology come to life through this art-form.

"Roughly half the students who build the guitars don't know how to play, maybe even more than that," says Parker. "So they build a guitar, they get this tremendous sense of pride in this gorgeous instrument that they've made and then they want to be able to do something with it."

Each guitar kit costs $200 and the teachers hope to get community help to fund it for their classrooms.
