(KAIT/NBC) -

It happens to one in three adults every year: sunburn. Some people actually end up in the hospital because of it.

One Texas mom's secret behind a quick sunburn heal went viral on Facebook.

She applied menthol foam shaving cream for 30 minutes, which made the sunburn disappear in about a day.

Dr. John Griffin claims anything with menthol may do the trick to soothe a burn. He's not convinced, however, it's the cure everyone wants.

The doctor admits that shaving cream is perfectly safe to try, unlike popular holistic products.

"The limitation of essential oils is that they're very high in concentration and there is a significant risk of irritation. It's hard to find what a good concentration would be, you'd be playing your own chemist I guess," Dr. Griffin says.

Over-the-counter treatments are mostly intended to comfort your skin while it heals.

Dr. Griffin says there's no scientific evidence that anything can speed up the healing process.
