Questions still unanswered surrounding Brian Lawler's death

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

As the family of pro-wrestler Brian Christian Lawler prepares for his funeral, questions continue to mount surrounding his death.

He was found hanging in a Hardeman County jail cell last week.

Like many of his fans, Brian's family has many questions about the circumstances leading up to his death, which came as a complete shock to them.

“It's very difficult obviously for Jerry to lose a child,” said attorney Ted Hansom, who represents the Lawler family. “I think every parent can understand."

Jerry “The King” Lawler has been asked by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation not to respond to his son's death.

"Certainly, the family is interested in understanding all of the facts and circumstances surrounding the loss of Brian,” Hansom said.

Three weeks after he was booked for DUI, a spokesperson for the TBI said jailers found Brian hanging in his cell. He died the next day at a hospital.

“What's been put out is this is a suicide, an attempted suicide, so yes, I would tell you the family is certainly shocked and surprised at that,” Hansom said.

The sheriff of Hardeman County said Brian was alone in his cell, and there was no indication he was suicidal.

If jailers had deemed him suicidal, state law requires they check on him more than once per hour.

Hansom said the family wants to know exactly what happened before and immediately after Brian was discovered.

“Obviously in this day and time places in particularly jails have video cameras in just about every corner, so it would be interesting to see the actual events,” Hansom said.

State inspectors recorded no problems at the Hardeman County Jail in the last three annual inspection reports – the latest in February.

Hansom is taking those reports at face value.

“I accept the reports for what they are and to the extent that they represent a report,” Hansom said.

He said the medical examiner's report should provide a lot of answers, along with the later report from TBI.

So far, there is no timeline on when those reports will be released.

Meanwhile, Brian’s funeral is set for Friday, Aug. 3. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. at Hope Church in Cordova, and the funeral will immediately follow.

Brian will be buried at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens.
