CLAY COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller is urging drivers to be careful in school zones.
With school starting back soon, he said his department is reminding everyone to pay attention.
He said many schools in the county are on, or near heavily traveled streets and drivers need to be aware of this.
Whether it's a crosswalk or not, anyone traveling near a school should be aware that students are often walking to and from buildings.
"Take that extra time, stay off your cell phones. That's against the law around the school zones in the first place," he said. "So, let's stay off the cell phones, let's take extra precaution and take care of our future."
He also encourages families to make sure your child is buckled up even if you are driving at a low rate of speed or for just a short distance.
He said not buckling up children is a violation and his department will hand out a citation to anyone who breaks the law.
Once school begins, the Clay County Sheriff's Department will be patrolling school zones to be sure everyone is driving safely and obeying all traffic laws.
