Newport High School is working to fix a safety concern before school starts back next week.
Superintendent Larry Bennett said that the school is adding gates to shut out through-traffic on Wilkerson Drive during school hours.
Bennett said that the main reasons for adding the gates are all safety related.
Students have to cross the street during school hours every day, and people not connected to the school drive through the area during lunch and try talking with students.
He said there have also been incidents where classes were disrupted by loud music from someone driving by, and last year there was a fight between adults who had no relation to the school.
The new gates are being put up Wednesday afternoon and will limit access to Wilkerson Drive, closing off the street from 8 a.m. until about 3:30 p.m. during school days.
The gates are expected to be finished before classes start back.
