EAST PRAIRIE, MO (KFVS) -

Keeping perishable food fresh during the summer heat can be difficult, but several food pantries in Southeast Missouri just got a tool that will help solve the problem.

Three food pantries, East Prairie’s Flame of Hope, Fredericktown’s Faith Family, and Sikeston’s Good Neighbor, have each received a walk-in cooler/ freezer to keep produce from spoiling.

Combined the three cooling devices cost about $10,000, and they were bought by SEMO Food Bank through a grant from the Margaret A Cargill foundation.

Jerry Britt is a longtime volunteer at Flame of Hope, which already has several freezers.

He says the new walk-in cooler will help keep produce like carrots and eggs fresh for longer, which is essential as the pantry can only get these items once a month.

"Those carrots for instance, there were some of them that went bad on us before we could get rid of them,” Britt said. “Not a lot of them but, like I said it will be a tremendous help to us because we will be able to keep stuff that like and won't have to throw it away. It will probably get more people to pick it too when they see we got it."

Right now the pantry sometimes uses a room with an A/C unit and fans to keep non-frozen foods cool, but Britt says that will change with the walk-in cooler.

“We could keep eggs we get in the cooler for a whole lot longer than we could keep them in that room,” he said. “I think about it more like helping the people because you know they are the ones that we are really here for to help. One thing about Bill Allen, who is the president of this thing, he said one time 'We are not going to let kids go hungry.'"

Britt says the pantry will hire someone to assemble the walk-in cooler and expects it to be done in a few weeks.

‘Flame of Hope’ plans to expand their selection of fresh produce when it's up and running.
