Plane Crash in Crittenden County Fatal to Pilot

WEST MEMPHIS, AR - Authorities say one person is dead after a small airplane crashed in Crittenden County.  The crash occured about 8 p.m. last night, north of Interstate-40 and west of Arkansas Highway 118, northwest of West Memphis.

State Police spokesman Bill Sadler said State Police Sergeant David Moore responded to a report of a crash and went to the scene.  According to Sadler, Moore said there appears to be one fatality.  The name of the victim wasn't yet available.

Marion Fire Chief Woody Wheeless confirmed that one person had been killed, but said that person hadn't yet been identified.

Sadler said Moore reported that the plane had just taken off from the West Memphis Airport on flight to Georgia, but turned back shortly after takeoff.

According to Sadler, the crash site is inside the West Memphis city limits, and the West Memphis Police Department will investigate.
