College Enrollment On The Rise in Arkansas

SEPTEMBER 28, 2005 - Posted at 8:18 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The fall's Arkansas college and university population is the largest it has ever been at 141,051.  The number represents a three percent increase a year ago.

The University of Central Arkansas in Conway showed the largest campus growth, with 2,506 freshmen this fall, just 260 fewer than the state's flagship University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.  UCA's population grew eleven percent to 11,375 students.

Arkansas Tech University in Russellville was second in growth, up 5.5 percent to to 6,841 students.  The University of Arkansas at Fayetteville has 17,821 students, up 3.2 percent.  All together, public four-year schools grew 3.2 percent.

Arkansas' two-year campus enrollment increased 3.3 percent to 29,517 students.

State Higher Education Department director Ron Harrell says the numbers are up because more people in Arkansas are realizing the value of a college degree.
