Plans to Widen Highway 18 Could be Moving Forward

MONETTE, AR - It's one of the busiest stretches of highway in northeast Arkansas, and now the Arkansas Highway & Transportation Department (AHTD) and the Federal Highway Administration have initiated an environmental assessment to study location alternatives for widening state Highway 18 to four lanes between Lake City and Dell.

Two public forums have been scheduled for later this month where the public can view possible plans and ask questions of highway officials.  The first session is scheduled for October 24 at the Monette Community Center (429 West Williams St.) from 4 to 7 p.m.  A second forum will take place on October 25 at the Manila Airport Center (855 Airport Road) from 4 to 7 p.m.  Both meetings will be identical in content and will be held in an open house format.

The AHTD four-laned a 5.4 mile leg of Highway 18 between Blytheville and Dell in Mississippi County in 2003, and just completed widening a 4.3 mile section of the roadway between Jonesboro and Needham.
