Region 8 Man Arrested for Allegedly Taking Refugee Money

FORREST CITY, AR - Police have arrested a man in Forrest City accused of accepting $1,565 from the American Red Cross by falsely claiming to be a Hurricane Katrina evacuee.

Johnny Buddy Warren, Jr, 34, of Forrest City, is charged with theft by deception.  Police say the man received the money after claiming he lived in Mississippi and showing a Mississippi identification card.  But police say Warren actually has been working at a Forrest City company for several years and lives in the city with his girlfriend and children.  Red Cross disaster relief funds were distributed at the Forrest City Civic Center after many residents sought shelter there after fleeing the Gulf Coast states when the hurricane hit August 29.
