Fewer Troops Slated for Iraq Deployment

NOVEMBER 7, 2005 - Posted at 3:36 p.m. CST

PENTAGON (AP) - The Pentagon has announced a troop rotation for Iraq that substantially reduces the number of soldiers to be deployed over the next few years.

The rotation announcement released today envisions 92,000 troops on the ground through 2008, down from the 138,000 deployed during most of 2005.  There are now about 160,000 soldiers in Iraq for the lead-up to December's election there.

One brigade of 3,500 soldiers previously slated for deployment before the election now won't be sent until next year.

But Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says additional units still could be added.  He says events on the ground will determine how many troops are ultimately needed.
