JONESBORO, AR - Today is Veterans' Day, and veterans across Region 8 were honored today for their service to their country.

In Jonesboro, the Craighead County Veterans Monument Foundation concluded a 24-hour vigil downtown on the lawn of the Craighead County Courthouse with a parade. The event gave "special recognition to those members of the 39th Infantry, 1123rd Transportation, 370th Chemical Company, and the 875th Engineers Battalion who have recently returned from a year of combat duty in Iraq during America's War on terrorism," said Foundation spokesman Ted Pylant.

A ceremony following the parade featured Lieutenant Colonel Larry Aikman, professor of military science at Arkansas State University.  Aikman served two combat tours in Iraq.

Also in Jonesboro this morning, the Colson Caster Corporation honored 30 active employees who have served in the armed forces with a special luncheon.

In Trumann, local veterans were honored in a 10 a.m. ceremony at the Trumann High School Auditorium.  In southeast Missouri, Three Rivers Community College observed the holiday with a special ceremony at noon.  In Cardwell, Missouri, Southland School observed Veteran's Day in a 2 p.m. ceremony this afternoon.

Several other ceremonies will be observed this weekend in Region 8, including tomorrow evening's final home football game at Arkansas State University, as the Indians host Sun Belt Conference rival Troy.
