JONESBORO, AR -- Six trucks left Little Rock Tuesday to deliver 350,000 pounds of food to food banks across the state, and one Region 8 food bank is using about 30,000 pounds to help feed families this holiday season.
Thanksgiving is just around the corner and the food bank of Northeast Arkansas needs your help.
“The hurricane has definitely affected the donations that we have had this year we have had to start purchasing food to supplement what we have donated to have enough to meet the need,” said Kristie Jordan of the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas.
The food bank partners with 97 agencies located in 14 counties to help feed those in need.
“During the holiday season we distribute tens of thousands of pounds on a weekly basis annually the food bank of Northeast Arkansas distributes more than 1.5 million pounds of food,” said Jordan.
Although the food bank is always receiving donations, they still come up short.
“Of course, honestly, we never have enough to meet the need,” said Jordan, “Over 160,000 families in Arkansas do not have enough food to eat each day and with holidays coming up the demand for food in Northeast Arkansas is all the greater.”
Thanks to the generosity of good neighbor businesses across Region 8 the food bank is able to make the holiday season brighter for many.
“We have lots of people coming in to get their holiday turkeys and their canned goods their special items they like to put in their food boxes so we are extremely busy this time of year,” said Jordan.
Anyone can help the food bank, as they are in constant need of food, volunteers and money.
