Elderly Altercation Ends in Serious Injury

November 25, 2005 - 11:39 a.m. CST

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (AP) _ Authorities say an 83-year-old man was
stabbed and badly wounded after a fight with a fellow participant
in an Arkadelphia meals-for-the-elderly program.

Denver Shuffield of Arkadelphia was taken by helicopter to
Baptist Medical Center at Little Rock. Police say 77-year-old James
Stroud of Arkadelphia pulled a pocketknife on Shuffield after
Shuffield hit him several times. The men were arguing about how
beverages are served during mealtime.

Arkadelphia Police Sergeant Harley Hillery says no charges have
been filed. Hillery says that because of Stroud's age, putting him
in jail is not a priority.

Shuffield was in critical condition.
