LITTLE ROCK, AR - Arkansas Highway Commission chairman Prissy Hickerson says the panel will have to find other ways to maintain interstate highways now that voters have rejected a bond proposal.
The state highway department and the commission will start next month to develop new four-year road plans. Highway department officials say it will be a challenge to fund all needed projects now that the bond proposal has failed.
Hickerson says the first priority will be to ensure that state interstate highways are safe. Hickerson says the highways had deteriorated to the point of being unsafe before a bond package was passed in the 1990s.
