Eudora Schools' Fate Uncertain

EUDORA, Ark. (AP) _ The Eudora School District in southeast
Arkansas should know by early next year whether the state will take
over the 600-student district.

Arkansas Education Commissioner Ken James says he will make a
recommendation by then to the state Board of Education. A state
takeover is one of the options.

After numerous offers of technical assistance, recent
evaluations and a school visit, James says, he doubts the district
can resolve its financial problems.

Last spring, the board listed Eudora among 12 school districts
in fiscal distress. Eudora's spending practices, if left unchanged,
would lead to a 272-thousand dollar negative balance at the end of
this school year.
