Con Artists Pose as Utility Rep's

DECEMBER 22, 2005 - Posted at 4:30 p.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A warning tonight from the Arkansas Attorney General office about a scam.

In this scheme reported by First Electric Cooperative, con artists pose as utility representatives. Customers receive calls from someone claiming to represent the cooperative. The caller offers a discount on electirc bills if the consumer agrees to sign up for an automatic bank-draft program over the phone.

Of course to sign up, the customers must give out bank account information to the caller.

Attorney General Mike Beebe says utility representatives will not show up at your door unannounced and will not ask for banking information in unsolicited phone calls.
