Low Mississippi River Levels Hurting Mid-South Business

DECEMBER 27, 2005 - Posted at 7:34 a.m. CST

MEMPHIS, TN - Lack of rain is hurting businesses along the Mississippi River in the Memphis area.

The river at Memphis is about 15 feet below normal for this time of year because of a dry summer and fall.

It's made it hard for barges to reach the docks along the river.

Some companies are planning to dredge deeper channels next to their docks.

Barring a major storm front through the Mississippi Basin, there doesn't appear to be any immediate relief in sight.
