LITTLE ROCK, AR - Arkansas State Police say the number of people killed on Arkansas roads is down this year. Through today there were 633 fatalities, the lowest since 2001, when 611 people died in fatal crashes. The ten-year average is 629. There were 702 people killed on Arkansas roads last year.
Despite the seemingly good news, officials with the Arkansas State Police say the numbers aren't an indicator of safer roads or better drivers. State Police spokesman Bill Sadler said there's no particular rhyme or reason to the numbers.
But Ellen Hill, a spokeswoman for the highway department, says the improvements made during the highway rehabilitation program made the roads safer for travelers.
