Hurricane Assistance Deadline Extended

DECEMBER 29, 2005 - Posted at 3:45 p.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The local Arkansas office of the Federal Emergency Management Management Agency announced today that refugees from hurricanes Katrina and Rita now have an extra 60 days to file for assistance.

The previous deadline was January 11, but now evacuees living in Arkansas have until March 11 to register for federal aid.  FEMA is urging refugees to register because they may later find out that personal insurance policies won't cover all of their damaged belongings.

FEMA officials also said that assistance grants are available through the U.S. Small Business Administration disaster loan program.
