Texas and Oklahoma Continue to Burn

DECEMBER 30, 2005 - Posted at 7:55 a.m. CST

DALLAS, TX - A Texas meteorologist says the ground's so dry that just the thought of shooting off New Year's Eve fireworks is "near blasphemy."

Oklahoma and Texas continue to be under burn bans as the holiday weekend arrives and there's particular concern about fireworks.  Texas Governor Rick Perry says his state is "a tenderbox" and is at "as high a level of opportunity for wildfires" as it can get.

Firefighters made headway on the fires yesterday.  But with forecasts calling for more warm, windy dry conditions, officials worry about what could happen next.

At least four deaths are blamed on the fires.  And nearly 200 homes and other buildings have been destroyed.
