Craighead County Sheriff Seeks Emergency Plan For Bridge

Jonesboro, AR - The Craighead County sheriff wants to come up with emergency response plans in case an earthquake destroys a bridge over the Saint Francis River.

  Sheriff Jack McCann says the eastern quarter of the county could be cut off if an earthquake took out the Highway 18 bridge at LakeCity.T he county is among those close to the New Madrid Fault, which stretches from southern Illinois into northeast Arkansas.

  In 1811 and 1812, some of the most powerful quakes to ever hit North America occurred in the area. State emergency management officials say Craighead County is likely to be among the counties hit hardest if a large quakeoccurred in the New Madrid zone. Others would be Clay, Greene,Mississippi, Poinsett, Cross, Randolph, Lawrence and Jackson counties.
