Jonesboro, AR -- Brandi Hodges Reports

First Baby Born in Jonesboro in 2006

January, 1 2006 -- Posted at 10:14 p.m. CST

JONESBORO, AR -- Trey Alan Blackwood is the first baby born in 2006 in Jonesboro.  Trey arrived New Years morning at 11:44 a.m.   Trey has a family who is very proud of him.

“Yeah, we're all excited. We got really excited when the nurse came in and told us that he would be the first,” said Trey’s grandmother, Brenda Harper.

Since Trey was born mid-morning his family didn’t think he would be the first baby born at St. Bernards on the holiday.

“We always think of New Years babies being born at midnight… so we weren't even thinking.  We thought that someone else had already had the New Years baby,” said Harper.

Trey’s mom Melissa Blackwood said, “I really didn't believe them at first... I said, ‘Really?’, and they were like, ‘Yeah, for here,’ and then they came back later and said for both hospitals.  I was like, ‘Well, that's pretty impressive’.”

The fact that labor was being induced on the first of January didn't even occur to Melissa until after little Trey was born.

As a gift for being the first baby born in 2006 the nurses at St Bernards Medical Center gave the Blackwood's a special gift:  a basket full of goodies for the baby.
