State Panel May be Named This Week in School Funding Case

JANUARY 5, 2006 - Posted at 8:09 a.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Governor Huckabee says he hopes a teachers panel that would meet secretly to develop school-funding recommedations will be named this week.

The group is one of several conditions the governor set if he is to call a special session to address the latest ruling by the Arkansas Supreme Court that the state isn't adequately funding its schools.

Dan Marzoni, president of the Arkansas Education Association, says his organization is preparing a list of its members who are also award-winning teachers.

Meanwhile, Matt DeCample, a spokesman for Attorney General Mike Beebe, says Beebe would need more information about the panel's makeup before issuing an opinion on whether the secret meetings would be legal.
