JANUARY 5, 2006 - Posted at 11:34 a.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A former jail guard testified in federal court today that he witnessed a guard accused of beating inmates engage in violent abuse on two occasions.

Former Craighead County jailer Jody Miller is accused of punching and kicking two handcuffed inmates and covering up one of the assaults.  Other guards took the witness stand in federal court in Little Rock today to testify against Miller.

Former guard Matt Whitley testified today that he saw Miller beat inmates on two occasions in 2004.  Whitley said he and Miller filed a false report to cover up one of the beatings.

Another former guard, David W. Gann, was also accused but charges were dismissed.

Miller is accused of punching prisoner Climmie Jones on March 29, 2004, and kicking Terry W. O'Neil of Brookland on April 1, 2004.

Testimony is continuing today.
