Huckabee Says He's Working Up Medicare Drug Proposal

JANUARY 10, 2006 - Posted at 3:57 p.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Governor Huckabee isn't releasing any details, but he says he is trying to devise a way to provide short-term help to poor and elderly Arkansans who need help with the new federal Medicare drug program.

Huckabee says he was talking with state officials about an alternative proposal to one raised by Attorney General Mike Beebe.  Beebe called the new Medicare program a "nightmare" and suggested the state use money from its Medicaid trust fund.

Huckabee says using the trust fund may not be allowed.  But the governor said he is working up his own proposal.
