Count of Homeless in Northeast Arkansas Begins Today

JANUARY 24, 2006 - Posted at 7:48 a.m. CST

JONESBORO, AR - Non-profit agencies and churches across northeast Arkansas are to join forces today to conduct an important study of the region's homeless.  Under the direction of the Northeast Arkansas Continuum of Care (NEACC), organizations will participate in a six-county homeless population census.  The study will serve as a benchmark, impacting the region's planning and funding of community services for years to come.

During today's daytime hours, the agencies involved will conduct interviews, and tonight, volunteers are expected to canvass the streets asking people about their housing situation.

The evaluation of the survey will provide regional organizations with the statistical information needed to submit fundable applications to the Department of Housing and Urban Development and other funding sources.  The information collected is strictly confidential and no names or Social Security numbers will be requested.
