Missouri Urged to Withhold Medicaid Payment to Federal Government

JANUARY 24, 2006 - Posted at 8:11 a.m. CST

JEFFERSON CITY, MO - A group of Missouri House Democrats wants the state to withhold a $90 million Medicaid payment to the federal government.

The new prescription drug benefit in the federal Medicare program also covers a select group of state Medicaid recipients.

But in return for taking over part of the state's Medicaid expenses, the federal government requires Missouri and other states to send it some of the savings.

Missouri House Democrat Judy Baker of Columbia argues that Missouri should keep the $90 million rather than sending it to Washington.  She says Missouri could use the funds to restore some of the Medicaid cuts the Legislature made last year.

Governor Blunt's administration says that's a dangerous idea that could jeapordize prescription drug coverage for older citizens.
