NEW ORLEANS (AP) - At least 147 Louisiana residents died in other states after Hurricane Katrina, or just before the storm.  Alabama had the largest total of Louisiana resident deaths, with 47; Mississippi was next with 22 and Arkansas third, with 19.

Among the deaths in Arkansas, a 17-year-old from East Baton Rouge Parish committed suicide.  The suicide, though, was not listed as related to the storm on death certificates sent to Lousiana's Vital Records Registry.

Darlene Smith, head of the state registry, has asked her counterparts in other states to send copies of death certificates of Louisiana evacuees.  The total figure is expected to rise.
