Senators Support Holding Back Aid for Palestinians

January 29, 2006 - Posted at 4:13 p.m. CST

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Democrats and Republicans are supporting

President Bush's plan to withhold money from Hamas after its

Palestinian election victory.

Representatives of both parties agree Hamas must abolish the

militant arm of its party and stop calling for the destruction of

Israel. The U-S views Hamas as a terrorist organization.

Hamas' strong showing in last week's voting has largely been

attributed to dissatisfaction with the ruling Fatah

party's ability to provide basic services, as well as widespread

corruption in its government.

The U-S was providing 150 million dollars in aid to the

Palestinian government this year.

Democratic Senator Barack Obama tells ABC he hopes Hamas will

moderate its hardline stance against Israel as it learns how to govern.
