LITTLE ROCK, AR - Nearly a quarter of Arkansas' 2.7 million drivers still use their Social Security numbers as their driver's license numbers, a practice that security experts say could lead to identity theft and other forms of fraud.
Arkansas stopped allowing residents to use the Social Security numbers as their license numbers in August 2003, but many haven't been renewed yet and the Social Security numbers are still in use. It will close to the middle of 2007 before the numbers are phased out.
A federal law that took effect last year bars letting drivers use their Social Security number as their driver's license number.
Having the numbers on drivers licenses amounts to a potential jackpot for identity thieves, and privacy experts warn against the practice.
