Elderly Region 8 Man Shoots Self While Cleaning Gun

FEBRUARY 8, 2006 - Posted at 8:11 a.m. CST

PROCTOR, AR - A 94-year-old man who accidentally shot himself in the abdomen while cleaning his shotgun is expected to make a full recovery, despite waiting until the next morning to ask for help.

Marcus Sturghill was trying to clean his .20-guage shotgun when it discharged and hit him with a load of birdshot in the abdomen Sunday.

Crittenden County sheriff's investigator Thomas Martin says Sturghill waited for a home health care nurse to arrive the next day before asking for medical attention.

Before the nurse arrived, Sturghill had cleaned the wound and wrapped it with a towel.

Martin says Sturghill was flown to a hospital in Memphis.
