LITTLE ROCK, AR - County assessors across Arkansas are switching to a new system for assessing personal property. That means some property owners will find unexpected changes in the assessed value of their vehicles.
The new system, Primemedia, was implemented January 1. The state says the new system will help coordinate data between counties and the state's Office of Motor Vehicles.
A vehicle identification number will provide the key piece of information required for assessments. The number will replace other vehicle information owners previously provided to county officials.
State officials say the new system will improve accuracy and save the state about $300,000 it spent each year to correct mistakes.
State official Debra Asbury said that although assessed values overall should decrease slightly, some taxpayers, especially those with older cars, may see increases.
