Rumsfeld Seeks Closer Ties in Historic Visit to Algeria

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) _ Donald Rumsfeld is in Algeria today on

what Pentagon officials believe to be the first visit to the

country by a U-S defense secretary.

Rumsfeld arrived from Tunisia, where he toured the North Africa

American Cemetery and laid a wreath in honor of the nearly

three-thousand U-S servicemen buried near the ancient city of


Algeria is the second stop on a three-day North Africa tour that

ends tomorrow in Morocco. Rumsfeld is trying to encourage more

cooperation to fight Islamic extremism and terrorism.

In Tunisia, Rumsfeld and leaders of the Muslim nation pledged to

build closer military ties.
