Prison Escapees Caught in Magnolia

FEBRUARY 18, 2006 - Posted at 3:35 p.m.

MAGNOLIA, AR - Two prisoners who escaped from the Columbia County jail have been found hiding under old mattresses at an abandoned house in Magnolia.

Sheriff Calvin Knighton said authorities received a tip yesterday that 28-year-old Thomas M. Cochran of Emerson and 26-year-old Jayson Wayne Carroll of Magnolia were hiding in a vacant mobile home after escaping Thursday night.

But officers found the men not in the mobile home, but in a nearby house, under mattresses, where they were apparently trying to keep warm in the 40-degree weather.

Cochran and Carroll escaped after emptying the garbage at the jail.

Carroll had been sentenced Friday to eight years for terroristic threatening and false imprisonment. Cochran was in the county jail on a parole violation involving credit card fraud.
