BUTLER, Mo. (AP) _ A western Missouri sheriff has died, of

complications from his heart and kidney transplant.

Bates County Sheriff Sidney Shippy died Friday. He was 57.

His friend and campaign manager, Van Burkholder, says Shippy had

the heart transplant in December at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,

Shippy was in his first term as sheriff, taking over in January

2005 after serving for 31 years in the Missouri State Highway

patrol. He was a zone sergeant when he left the patrol, spending

most of his career in Bates County.

Burkholder says the sheriff, an avid outdoorsman and Civil War

re-enactor, took an active role in running his department, despite

his illness.
